So the news is in (it’s been in for a while, to be fair) and Daniel Craig IS going to return as James Bond! Thank god for that, everything was up in the air for a while wasn’t it? I for one am delighted that Craig is going to do one more Bond, he still has a lot to offer and I hope he can bow out on a high. We’re still waiting on news as to who is going to direct the film though, I don’t think Sam Mendes will return. Fingers crossed though it will be gritty and offer something different, I really hope they don’t continue the story from Spectre which wasn’t great lets be honest.
So, if Daniel Craig is just coming back for one more Bond film it does still make me wonder about the future of the series? They will have to re-cast at some point over the years and by the time they do Idris Elba, Damian Lewis, and some of the other ‘contenders’ will be late forties and surely too old. Who do you think will emerge to be the favourite? Someone like Tom Hardy or someone left-field like that bloke off Poldark (that’s, Aiden Turner btw).
Whichever way you look at it, being James Bond is no easy task. Pierce Brosnan clearly doesn’t think much of his tenure as James Bond (https://www.theguardian.com/film/2014/apr/14/pierce-brosnan-james-bond-never-good-enough) and Timothy Dalton (the best Bond, in my humble opinion) got caught up in the political studio struggles (http://www.007.info/the-007-film-that-never-was-daltons-third-bond/) and really got pushed out because several years were lost (http://theweek.com/articles/447045/timothy-dalton-opens-about-penny-dreadful-leaving-james-bond-demon-all). Either way, it’s a franchise that can make or break careers and in Daniel Craig’s its clearly added to what was already a successful career to begin with. For that reason, I can understand why some actors don’t want to take it on and become type-cast. That was one of Timothy Dalton’s fears, and from what I’ve read it seems to be one of Michael Fassbender’s fears as well and at 39, he may well be too old when Craig does walk away and the job is available.
I can’t see an end for James Bond though. There will always be a need for him and the last several decades have clearly shown that the cinema James Bond changes with the times and can adapt to anything! I for one am looking forward to Daniel Craig’s swansong and all the films that are to come.
